Then She Was Speechless by Chance Calderon BOOK REVIEW

What can children do when their mother asks them to help her die?

Ruth, an extraordinary eighty-year-old with a PhD in the Arts, who has suffered a stroke that left her without the capacity to speak, read, or write, tries in vain to commit suicide.

Dumbstruck, her children realize that their mother’s situation requires 24/7 supervision and they jointly decide to move her into the bosom of the family.

Each one of the children, however, has their own personal problems, and Ruth’s mental and physical deterioration make the whole situation unbearable and explosive.

Bitter, and no longer wishing to endure her incapacitation, Ruth decides she wishes to die, and without words, asks her children for assistance, as her last wish.

When the request becomes a reality, her children face an enormous dilemma — to comply with her last wish or to fight for their beloved mother’s life to the end.

Hello, readers!

I received "Then She Was Speechless" by Chance Calderon to review on my blog!

A beautifully written debut novel by Chance Calderon. It is a very compelling family story about the topic of assisted suicide. It was a very emotional and heartbreaking read from beginning to the end. Very tear-jerking moments throughout this journey.

The story is about an 80 year old lady named Ruth. She suffered a stroke that left her unable to speak, read,or write. She tries to commit suicide. Her children realizes this and gives her around the clock supervision. The children suffers from their own issues.

Ruth's mental and physical situation makes the whole situation unbearable. She makes the decision that she is ready to die. Her last wish is for them to help assist her with the suicide. The children are at a crossroads where they have to decide should they follow her wishes or watch her dying in agonizing pain.

A very controversial book. Not many books discuss the subject of assisting in a suicide. I found it to be a very unique topic.

Definitely, worth a read!

I highly recommend it!
